NASHVILLE — When Tennessee Titans GM Ran Carthon spoke to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine last week, things seemed to be rather quiet on the trade front.
Carthon said that he had yet to be contacted by any teams with interest in trading for the seventh overall pick. The second-year GM said that other teams had not been "nosy" like they were in 2023…But they have changed in recent days.
According to a report from Vic Tafur and Tashan Reed of The Athletic, the Titans have had conversations with the Las Vegas Raiders about trading draft picks.
In an article laying out what they learned from Indianapolis during the NFL Combine, Tafur and Reed assert that newly hired Raiders GM Tom Telesco has been exploring a trade up.
"Telesco has also had conversations centered on potentially trading for picks in the 5 to 7 range, which are owned by the Los Angeles Chargers (pick No. 5), New York Giants (No. 6) and Tennessee Titans (No. 7). That type of trade could be made to put the Raiders in range for another trade up later or a player at another premium position, but it mostly makes sense if it’s a move up for a quarterback like Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy," the report reads.
It shouldn't come as a surprise. With the Titans sitting one spot ahead of the Atlanta Falcons, who are in the market for a new quarterback, they are certain to get calls from teams wanting to trade up. The more interest the league has in J.J. McCarthy, the better it is for Tennessee.
The Denver Broncos (12th) recently became trade up candidates after they cut Russell Wilson. The Minnesota Vikings (11th) also have some uncertainty at the position with Kirk Cousins about to hit free agency.
And as we now know, the Raiders are poking around for a way to get in the Top 10. The question is if anybody would give up enough to make it worth it for the Titans to pass on one of the elite prospects in this draft class.
