Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan has been busy building his staff since he was hired on January and he has found his offensive coordinator.
Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Callahan is stealing away Jacksonville Jaguars pass game coordinator, Nick Holz. The two coaches have an extensive history that harkens all the way back to their high school days and the hope is the deep relationship can help the Titans offense hit the ground running in 2024.
Holz was also an offensive quality control coach at Nebraska in 2007, when none other than, yep, you guessed it – Bill Callahan (Brian's father and new Titans OL coach) was the head coach, at the time. The younger Callahan and Holz also worked together under Jon Gruden in Oakland for one season. Overall, Holz has coached in the NFL for 11 total seasons.
The NFL is all about connections, but it is interesting to note how far these two go back. The familiarity will be key in creating and implementing Callahan's system, as both guys know what they're looking for in their offense and what they need to do in order to make sure it's effective in nature.
As Rapoport mentioned, Holz has play-calling experience, but only at the collegiate level, where his UNLV Rebels offense averaged 24.0 points per game – good for 85th out of 131 eligible teams in 2022. With Callahan calling plays, it seems like Holz will essentially repeat what Callahan did in Cincinnati, which is obviously not a bad gig to have if it can eventually lead to a head coaching job.
Callahan is clearly taking what he learned in Cincy and applying it to the Titans. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but so far, the moves have made sense.
