NASHVILLE — The highlight of Tuesday's press conference at Saint Thomas Sports Park was Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel naming rookie quarterback Will Levis the team's starter moving forward.
But in between the questions surrounding Levis and Vrabel's big decision, the Titans' head coach shared some critical updates about injuries to a number of Titans players.
Vrabel provided more context to the status of players like Treylon Burks, Chris Hubbard, Roger McCreary, Sean Murphy-Bunting, and more.
Vrabel called the Titans' offensive line a "work in progress throughout the week" as the team assesses who will be healthy enough to play in Tampa on Sunday. Nicholas Petit-Frere will be out, but many other offensive linemen went down with injuries and could miss time. Daniel Brunskill is a name to watch in particular.
The good news? Chris Hubbard should return to practice this week and has a chance to play if he clears concussion protocol. "Chris will be out there," Vrabel said of Hubbard. "I think he's got to go through some full practices to where then he can be evaluated after that. But he's at that stage where he can practice."
Unfortunately, wide receiver Treylon Burks is not in the same boat. Burks' scary head injury on Thursday Night Football has landed him in concussion protocol this week. As of now, things don't look good for his chances to suit up on Sunday.
As I wrote earlier in the week and anticipated, Vrabel also came with updates on the Titans' secondary and the injuries of Roger McCreary and Sean Murphy-Bunting. "Sean (Murphy-Bunting) won't practice today. So, we'll see where he is at the end of the week, but Roger (McCreary) should be good to go," said Vrabel on Tuesday.
Murphy Bunting started the game in Pittsburgh on Thursday Night Football, but reaggravated an existing thumb injury and was forced out of the game. SMB being absent for Tuesday's practice is not a great sign, but at least McCreary is ready to make his return.
In other news, Ryan Tannehill continues to work his way back from a high ankle sprain. Vrabel wouldn't go as far as to say Tannehill was fully healthy and able to play, but my sense is that the 35-year-old quarterback has been making progress. With the latest news of Levis being elevated to starter, there's no rush to get Tannehill back on the field.
Mike Vrabel names new Titans starting QB
The Tennessee Titans have their new starting quarterback. It's officially the Will Levis era in Nashville. Titans head coach Mike Vrabel named rookie QB Will Levis the team's starter on Tuesday afternoon. There's seemingly been some 'tough love' comments from Vrabel regarding Levis, but this choice was clear. Tannehill's struggles and Levis' upside and energy […]
