Well, Tennessee Titans fans who were expecting new head coach Brian Callahan to result in a blockbuster addition of wide receiver Tee Higgins were always destined to be hit with a bucket of cold water.

On Friday, the Cincinnati Bengals reportedly informed the talented wide receiver that he is going to receive the franchise tag, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. They'll be forced to pay him a one-year deal for $21.816 million if he does play under the tag.

With Callahan arriving at Tennessee, Titans fans made a lot out of a potential trade for Higgins, as wide receiver remains a big need for the franchise, which, by the way, already has a quarterback in Will Levis.

The Bengals tagging Higgins pretty much just shot down such dream before it even got going. The wideout won't be hitting free agency even though many thought it possible given Ja'Marr Chase's presence on Cincy's roster, which will be quite extensive once he lands his second deal in the NFL.

But for those looking for a silver lining, there might be an extremely thin string of hope to hold on to…

The Titans could still trade for Higgins

As NFL fans very well know, tagged players can essentially be traded for. The Titans' 38th overall pick could be exactly what could get Higgins to Nashville but even then they'd still have to sign him to a new deal.

One thing is to pay money for a player and another one is to give up draft capital. My recommendation? Move on, Titans Nation.

The Higgins-Titans storyline was overhyped all along and now it's (almost) as over as the Mike Vrabel era.
