NASHVILLE — With the way Will Levis is currently playing for the Tennessee Titans, head coach Mike Vrabel has to be pleased with his rookie quarterback.
Levis has proven to be tough, clutch, and a tremendous leader. He has made some exceptional throws and elevated the Titans offense since taking over as the starter. But Tennessee has one problem…He refuses to slide.
Levis is willing to put his body on the line for his team. An admirable quality, but a nightmare for a head coach. So how are the Titans going to get Levis to stop putting himself at risk? Mike Vrabel's solution is hilarious.
Vrabel told the media in his Tuesday press conference that the coaching staff has tried showing Levis examples of quarterbacks who slid to protect themselves and were using the rules to their advantage. Perhaps that means timing a slide to draw a hit from a defender and a penalty flag.
Obviously, that didn't work. The competitor in Levis took over on Monday Night Football in Miami. He was seeking out contact while running with the football and even lowered his shoulder to run over Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey.
Again, a very admirable effort that had every Titans fan and player fired up. But also an objectively dangerous choice made by Levis just to gain a couple extra yards.
So if showing Levis film on quarterbacks who were good at sliding didn't stop him, what will? Mike Vrabel said on Tuesday that the Titans are going to take the opposite approach this week, showing Levis examples of what happens when a quarterback fails to slide and runs into the wrong defender.
"I don't know. We're still trying to work on that. We showed him examples of quarterbacks sliding and using the rules to their advantage. I guess we'll have to show him examples of quarterbacks not sliding and getting the shit knocked out of 'em," said Vrabel in his press conference. "We're going to try the other way this week."
Just a perfect and hilarious response from Mike Vrabel…but no, seriously, Levis has got to start sliding at the end of his runs. His health is too important to the organization both this year and in the future for him to be taking those chances.
