NASHVILLE — Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel spoke to the media on Wednesday morning and revealed the team's plan at quarterback moving forward.
After being diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, there are questions about the health of Will Levis. As a result, the Titans were tasked with deciding who would start in his place if he is not healthy enough to go.
Here's a full update on Tennessee's plans for this weekend against Seattle.
Tannehill over Willis
Vrabel shared with the media on Wednesday that it would be veteran Ryan Tannehill taking the first team practice reps over Malik Willis on Wednesday. Vrabel added that if Levis were unable to go, Tannehill would start the game for Tennessee.
"I would imagine that Ryan (Tannehill) will take those snaps and Malik (Willis) will be with the offense as well, and then we'll see where it goes," said Vrabel on Wednesday. "Ryan would be the quarterback if Will (Levis) is unavailable."
When asked why the Titans' would go with Tannehill over Willis, Vrabel avoided going into detail. "Because Ryan has been the backup quarterback," he said.
More than anything, these answers are not a good sign for Willis. With the team eliminated from playoff contention, the only reason for Tennessee to sit Willis in the game is if they don't believe he is capable of running the offense to a functional level.
The last three games of the season will be all about development and evaluation for the younger players on the Titans' roster. Titans coaches won't be able to get a good look at players like Treylon Burks if the offense isn't running like normal.
Will Levis Playing If Possible
Another point of note when it comes to the Titans' quarterback room is that Will Levis (ankle) will be playing in Sunday's game if he's physically capable. The rookie made that very clear during his press conference.
According to Levis, he has always had the mentality that you play if you are able. He regularly played through pain during his collegiate career at Kentucky.
Although Levis was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, the 24-year-old quarterback seems to be improving quickly. He did not have a noticeable limp on Wednesday and was not wearing a brace walking around in the locker room. Levis seemed encouraged by the progress he had made in the three days since going down against Houston.
I still think it's unlikely Levis suits up against the Seahawks, but make no mistake about it, the Titans will not be sitting him down if he's capable of being out there. These reps are invaluable and Levis is prepared to take advantage of them.
