NASHVILLE — We're two weeks out from the 2024 NFL Draft and Notre Dame left tackle Joe Alt remains the odds on favorite to be drafted by the Tennessee Titans with the seventh overall pick.
On sportsbooks such as BetMGM.com, Alt is so heavily favored to be a Titan that he’s currently minus odds (-120) to be taken seventh overall.
The consensus around the NFL seems to be that if Alt is there at 7, the Titans will draft him. It’s an assumption I’d probably agree with. But what if Alt is off the board already? NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller laid out Tennessee’s backup plan in a recent article.
The latest scoop on the Titans from Miller seemed to validate the speculation surrounding Alt. "Sometimes it's easy to connect the dots, and this pick feels like a foregone conclusion as long as Alt is still on the board when the Titans pick," said Miller about Alt going to Tennessee at pick seven.
But if Alt is gone, Miller was "told the Titans would consider trading back and perhaps targeting Penn State's Olu Fashanu or Taliese Fuaga."
Ran Carthon and the Titans definitely need to be prepared for this scenario and have a backup plan. Alt at seven feels safe and easy, but no matter how many mock drafts predict Alt landing in Music City, I have a hard time envisioning zero offensive tackles being drafted with the first six picks.
In my most recent mock draft, I have Tennessee trading back to 14 once Alt comes off the board early. Whether it's Fashanu, Fuaga, or JC Latham (as I predicted) that the Titans end up getting, I'm not sure I'd have a problem with it as long as the price for trading down is right.
The real question I have is what the Titans would do if Alt is off the board and LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers is still available. If it were me, I wouldn't be trading back in that situation. Time will tell just how much Ran Carthon and Tennessee value the extra draft capital they'd get from trading down.
