NASHVILLE — With free agency and the new league year looming, NFL front offices have been busy clearing salary cap space this week.

For the Tennessee Titans, the recent roster cuts made by other teams is a big win that opens up options. There are several veteran players at a position of need that are now joining the pool of free agents.

So far, six former Pro Bowl safeties and a handful of other starting-caliber safeties have been added to the free agent market.

Justin Simmons (DEN), Jordan Poyer (BUF), Jamal Adams (SEA), Kevin Byard (PHI) Quandre Diggs (SEA), and Eddie Jackson (CHI) were all recently released by their respective teams.

Of those six former Pro Bowl safeties, five have been an All-Pro before. Five have started over 100 games in their NFL career. Four have at least 20 career interceptions.

That's a lot of incredibly talented and experienced safeties joining a free agent class that also has players like Rayshawn Jenkins, Micah Hyde, and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. An abundance of options for teams in the market for a safety, which the Tennessee Titans very much are.

I think the Titans need to add an experienced safety to their secondary that can compliment Amani Hooker. While Hooker had a very solid 2023 season, I still think he's at his best when paired with a ballhawk that can create turnovers. That's what made him and Kevin Byard such a strong duo in Nashville from 2019-2023, but it's not something Tennessee had once Byard was traded to the Eagles.

The Titans' roster has a lot of holes that need to be filled. I see the 2024 NFL Draft being used to address a lot of the offensive problems the team has while free agency can be focused (primarily) on defense.

Titans fans should be elated by all the safeties becoming free agents. It just means that Tennessee has more bona fide options and is more likely to find an answer for a position of need. The veteran leadership would also undoubtedly help in the locker room.
