The Tennessee Titans face off against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, kicking off the Cam Ward era. It’s a bit of a nightmare start for the Titans, at least on paper. A rookie QB in his NFL debut, on the road, at elevation, against what looks like the best defense in the entire league? Not exactly a soft landing for the No. 1 overall pick.

The Broncos’ Plan Of Attack

Broncos head coach Sean Payton was asked about his scouting of Ward this week, as he prepares to try to ruin the rookie’s debut.

“You have a limited exposure in the preseason with him,” Payton said. “Then you would go back and look at his college tape at Miami just to get a feel for not only arm strength, but how does he handle pressure, how does he handle his own? We do a pretty in-depth study. It’s pretty normal when you play teams early in the season, maybe to not have all the information you might have when you play a team Week 8 or 9.”

There’s no doubt this ferocious Broncos defense plans on putting Ward in a blender. It was the best team rushing the passer in 2024, and it added pieces at LB and in the secondary to turn a strength into a greater strength. There doesn’t appear to be a hole in this unit, and it’ll be doing everything in its power to move Ward off his spot.

“The No. 1 thing that stood out,” Payton explained to the media about scouting the Titans, “I’ve worked with [Titans Offensive Line Coach] Bill Callahan before. He is a fantastic line coach, and I’m sure they felt they had to get better in that area, and they committed a lot of resources there.” This offensive line unit in Tennessee is the most encouraging thing about this entire team around Cam Ward, for my money at least. I’m as high as anybody on their ability to take a huge leap this year. But against possibly the best pass rush in the NFL, I’m not sure how much can be done to keep Ward particularly clean in his first game. If they manage to keep him upright all afternoon, I’ll have a hard time saying reasonably-tempered things about the offensive line on Monday morning. Because that would be a real surprise.

Cam Ward’s Response

Titans coach Brian Callahan spoke on Wednesday about the things a rookie QB should expect to have thrown at him by teams looking to get him rattled.

“They test you,” Callahan said. “They’re going to see what you can handle. And the old adage for most quarterbacks is, if they test you and they pressure you and it works, probably coming again. And you’re going to get tested until you show you can handle it.”

When Ward was asked about Payton and the Broncos’ defense throwing him off his game, his response was as classic cool-Cam as it gets.

“Know your protection, get the ball out, don’t let them kill you,” Ward said matter-of-factly. “I mean, that’s really all you can do to handle pressure, no matter what the blitz you call, the blitz still got to get there. So a lot of stuff can get walled up at the line of scrimmage. But I’ve just continued listening to my coaches who have prepped me for the past week’s preseason game, protect myself, and then put the ball in the playmaker’s hand.”

He’ll have to maintain that cool head when the bullets start flying in Denver for his team to stand a chance.
