NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans and head coach Mike Vrabel pulled the trigger on a franchise-altering move this week by naming rookie quarterback Will Levis as the team's starter moving forward.
With Ryan Tannehill recovering from a high ankle sprain, Levis stepped up and threw for 500 yards and four touchdowns in the first two games of his NFL career. That was enough to earn him the starting nod.
But with the Tannehill era of Titans football effectively over, the 35-year-old veteran quarterback spoke to the media on Wednesday to reflect upon the decision.
As usual, Tannehill handled the news with class. While I got the impression that Tannehill did not see this coming or agree with the decision, he stated his willingness to help Levis along in the coming weeks.
"It hits hard. I've never been in this situation before, so it hits hard. Never a situation that anyone wants to be in, but it's the situation I'm in so I've gotta walk through it," said Tannehill, who also claimed that he did not see this coming when he first got injured against Baltimore. "[Will Levis] has done some good things. I'm going to be here to answer any questions he has and try to help out along the way. "
"I want to handle the situation with class. It's not a fun situation to be in, but I want to be a pro and handle it with class and still be a guy that people can look to," Tannehill continued. "You can disagree with the situation, but you're not going to plead your case. That's not the way it works."
The 35-year-old quarterback concluded his time at the podium reflecting on his time as the starting quarterback in Nashville. While some will remember Tannehill for the playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the Tannehill era should be remmebered for how the organization turned things around and won a lot of football games.
"Hopefully people can look back and see the good things I did," said Tannehill before stepping away from the podium.
Some of the best moments in Tennessee Titans history happened with Ryan Tannehill at quarterback. While the change to Will Levis was necessary and the new era is one Titans fans should be excited for, we can still look back on Tannehill's time in the two-tone blue fondly.
