Titans suffer an unthinkable embarrassment with 13th loss of the season
How could it come to this?
JACKSONVILLE — The 2024 Tennessee Titans (3-13) have been a colossal waste of time. Losing their 13th game of the season in Week 17 only solidified that fact.
Somehow, Tennessee is still managing to find new lows in a season filled with them.
Titans are arguably the worst team in football this year
Sunday's latest humiliation will be a tough one for fans to stomach.
"(The losses) all feel terrible, to be honest," said first year coach Brian Callahan. "We still had a tipped ball turnover and that was the difference in the game. We lost the turnover battle 1-0, and that's been the story of the season as the turnovers are putting ourselves in tough spots and that was ultimately the difference. Again, it was one — needed to find one play somewhere and they found one, the turnover, and found a way to score and we didn't get one.”
It was far from the worst game that the Titans have played this season.
A 20-13 defeat is a borderline victory for a team that's lost seven games by 10 or more points this year. No, the worst part of Sunday was the fact that a now-four win Jacksonville Jaguars team owes half of those success to…the Tennessee Titans. You don't lose to Jacksonville under normal circumstances, and this team did it TWICE.
In doing so, Tennessee guaranteed a second consecutive last place finish in the AFC South.
By record, it is the worst division in the NFL this year. The Titans were swept by both the Jaguars and the Indianapolis Colts (7-9) in 2024. Additionally, Tennessee made history on Sunday by becoming the only team in the Super Bowl era to fail to cover the spread in 14 games during a season (2-14 ATS). The Titans secured the worst record against the spread of any team since 1978, when the NFL went to 16 games, according to ESPN.com's David Payne Purdum.
Not only are they unwatchable, but they'll cost you money more often than not.
So, are they numb to the losing at this point, or just plain bad?
"I hope they're not numb to them," Callahan said. "I'm sure not. It sucks. It's terrible. It's no — there's no joy in this process. There's no fun in this. It's terrible. I feel it every day I walk in to work. I feel out every day I stand up here in front of you guys. Nothing is enjoyable about this, so I don't get numb to any of it and I hope nobody gets numb to it. My job is to try to fix it and do whatever we can to fix whatever problems we got to fix to add whatever players we have to add to make sure we have a better football team moving forward.”
Not a job anyone would envy at this point.
