NASHVILLE – Tennessee Titans running back Tony Pollard (ankle) will be active and play in the team's regular season finale against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
Pollard was limited in practice this week with an ankle injury. The veteran running back made it clear he wanted to play in the game, but head coach Brian Callahan knows it's important to get some of his guys into the offseason healthy.
"It's going to be ultimately if he's healthy enough to play and feels good to play, you let him go," Callahan said earlier this week. "If I feel like he's not in a position to be healthy enough to perform and play the way he needs to play, then we'll give him give another week and then get him into the offseason. But I think he wants to play."
Of course Pollard wants to play. The 27-year-old running back still has remaining contract incentives that can net him a big pay day if he can tally 86 rushing yards in Week 18 and get to 1,100 on the season ($250,000) or if he can score two rushing touchdowns for a season total of seven ($200,000).
Pollard just missed out on a $100,000 incentive for making the Pro Bowl on the "original ballot" when he was announced as an AFC reserve earlier this week.
"I'll be honest, I try to when opportunities arise to give guys those chances. That's money on the table for them. I try to do as best I can to get them those things if it's possible. I'll never force it. I'll never go out of my way to do it," said Callahan when asked if these statistical incentives factor into Week 18 decision making with Pollard. "But if he wants to go and try to hit those markers, then I'll do my best to put him in that position. But I can't make any promises."
There was a chance that the Titans were going to sit Pollard and meet him halfway (or all the way) on his contract incentives regardless. But it now seems they are giving him every opportunity to earn his keep.
Pollard Active
Pollard did not find himself on the list of inactives for the Titans on game day. Former Tennessee Volunteers running back Jabari Small was supposed to get the call up if Pollard was unable to go.
Instead, it will be Pollard complimented by Julius Chestnut and Joshua Kelley in the backfield.
