In the Tennessee Titans’ final practice in Nashville before embarking on their preseason road trip, a reunion that felt months in the making finally became a reality.

Quandre Diggs, Cousin And Pro Bowler

Finally, the Titans added a familiar face to the team on Monday who has been spiritually with the team all year long if you looked at his social media presence: safety Quandre Diggs. Diggs was a starter for the Titans the first half of the season last year before suffering a Lisfranc fracture in his foot in Week 9, knocking him out for the year. In case you’ve forgotten, that was the half of the year when the defense was (surprisingly) quite good. Diggs and Ernest Jones at LB were essentially the straw that stirred the drink for that unit, as evidenced by a downward spiral as soon as they were both gone.

A free agent all year as he healed up, Diggs signed yesterday and was on the field already today. He said his foot has been good to go for a while now, and he’s excited to be back. But why here, after a 3-14 season he experienced firsthand?

“I love the coaching staff… obviously have Tony Oden who was my cornerback coach my first three years in the league, he brings another dynamic to the coaching staff. And It’s always a treat when you can look over there and see your little cousin as the starting quarterback. My best friend is the number 2 receiver, I’ve got (Amani) Hooker, I’ve got Jeff (Simmons), I’ve got Arden (Key), and I’ve got all these guys that I built special bonds with last year. So why not go somewhere where you’re familiar with the guys over there and can let it shake out how it’s supposed to?”

That best friend he referenced is Tyler Lockett, his old Seattle teammate. The two have been in touch all offseason as Diggs waited to join a team. And if you hadn’t already heard, Diggs is Cam Ward’s first cousin! They grew up together. So he’s been a big advocate of Cam and supporter from afar of Ward’s new team, which is now his team once again as well. Now that he’s here, though, what’s his role going to be?

“I’m not content with anything, I’m a competitor. I’m a three-time Pro Bowler, you feel me? I’ve been one of the best in the league for a long time. So ‘content’, that’s not what I do gang.”

Diggs was one of the better safeties in the entire league the first half of last year. Even at 32 years old, he’s still got the goods if he stays healthy. Many consider the Titans DL to be the best position group on this roster, but for my money, that title now belongs to the safeties. Amani Hooker, Xavier Woods, and Quandre Diggs are three bona fide NFL starting safeties. And rookie Kevin Winston Jr, who I am extremely bullish on, may one day be better than all of them. There’s a broader conversation to be had about the rotation and impact on the future of the team, but for now, just enjoy one of the only positions on this team that is legitimately loaded.
