NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Titans added a quarterback on Wednesday, signing veteran QB Trevor Siemian to the practice squad.
Prior to the addition of Siemian, the Titans were the only organization in football without a third quarterback. Only Will Levis and Mason Rudolph (both on the active roster) were in the QB room.
While Brian Callahan and the Titans staff loved the practice opportunities this gave to Rudolph, the Titans may really need an emergency third quarterback on Sunday given Levis' ongoing injury situation.
Levis hurt his right shoulder against the Miami Dolphins and has since been nursing his AC joint back to health. While the Titans expect him to be ready to play on Sunday at Nissan Stadium, Levis will likely be playing through some pain. Should something go sideways during the game, Tennessee does not want to be left with only one quarterback that can step in and play.
"We also signed Trevor Siemian today to the practice squad just to have another veteran quarterback. Just to have some familiarity so if we needed him for the emergency third on Sunday we could potentially use him," said head coach Brian Callahan during Wednesday's press conference. "So just with a quarterback dealing with injury it was the smart thing for us to do as an insurance policy to have Trevor come in and get some familiarity with our offense."
I don't think Siemian is anything more than insurance policy for the Titans. It's a veteran that has spent time with Callahan in both Denver and Cincinnati. He knows the offense well.
Siemian will probably be elevated for Sunday's game. Why sign him if he wasn't going to be available on game day? But this does not signal to me that Levis is going to be unavailable.
