NASHVILLE — Tennessee Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks has had a really disappointing start to the 2024 season.
Expectations for Burks were not unreasonably high. After all, he is Tennessee’s fourth wide receiver. But Burks’ production has been shockingly nonexistent for the number of snaps he has played on offense.
With DeAndre Hopkins working his way back from a knee injury, Burks has been forced into action. But his numbers are still some of the worst in the NFL.
Burks is one of 75 NFL wide receivers who have played at least 66 passing snaps this season. Of those receivers, Burks is dead last in receiving yards (11), percentage of targets caught (33.3%), receptions (2), yards after catch (4), drop rate (33.3%), and passer rating when targeted (2.8).
He is also in the bottom three in targets (6), yards per route run (0.17), and yards per reception (5.5).
Any way you slice it, Burks has been one of the least valuable wide receivers in the NFL to start the season. The Titans coaching staff has said that they have graded Burks very highly internally. Titans coaches have told me that Burks is doing his job, which includes stretching the field and freeing up the other wide receivers on the roster to make plays.
But let's be honest about things…If Burks isn't being targeted and isn't catching the balls that are thrown to him, how effective of a decoy can he really be? In order to be a good decoy, there has to actually be a threat of you making plays.
"We want Treylon to play. We want him to go out there and make plays and at some point, if you keep getting targets and things don't go your way…Sometimes it's been a little bit of bad luck," said offensive coordinator Nick Holz when asked if the Titans need to give some of Burks' snaps to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine.
"We have faith in Treylon. We have faith in Nick [Westbrook-Ikhine]. We believe both of those guys are valuable pieces of their offense," Holz continued.
Head coach Brian Callahan said on Friday that he needs to do a better job of getting NWI involved in the offense. He can start by getting NWI more snaps in Burks' place. Treylon hasn't done anything to earn those snaps moving forward.
