NASHVILLE — An elite quarterback can make any NFL franchise an attractive landing spot for coaches and free agents.
Before Tom Brady went to Tampa, the Buccaneers were the bottom feeders of the NFC South that finished dead last in the division eight times from 2009-2018. Once Brady arrived, it became a hot spot for free agents.
In the same way, everybody over the last few seasons has wanted to go play for or coach the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, or Baltimore Ravens.
In order to evolve into one of the NFL's top organizations, you need a quarterback who can make jobs with the team attractive to outsiders. That's something Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis is already doing in Nashville.
Levis makes coaching jobs attractive
In a recent press conference that introduced newly hired Titans offensive coordinator Nick Holz and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson to the media, Tennessee's new coaches both discussed why the Titans were a good fit for them.
For Wilson, his relationship with GM Ran Carthon and head coach Brian Callahan made the Titans an ideal landing spot. Wilson subscribes to many of the same "core values" as Carthon and Callahan and has "always admired the Titans organization" from afar.
But according to Holz, an offensive coach whose career path will be greatly impacted by the success of quarterback Will Levis, the promise that Levis has shown early in his career was a driving force for himself and other coaches coming to Tennessee.
"I hadn't really watched very much of him," said Holz of Levis during the pre-draft process in 2023. "Then starting to watch him when I was with the Jags as opponent crossover film, the first thing that kind of jumped off is obviously the arm talent. And then the second thing, I would say, that really jumps off is the toughness."
"I think we talk about, for quarterbacks, really the three things we're looking for is decision-making, accuracy, and toughness, and you saw all that," said Holz. "I think it's a reason what made this job probably so attractive to Brian (Callahan) and probably the rest of us."
I think it's fair to say that decision-making, accuracy, and toughness were three things that Levis absolutely flashed during his rookie season with the Titans. Not to mention the arm strength to make off-platform throws and deliver catchable deep balls.
There's a reason most people are optimistic about the long-term trajectory of the Titans. That reason is Will Levis. If he's a franchise quarterback, the rest should take care of itself.
But I think it's interesting to hear Holz mention Levis as a reason why the job openings with the Titans were attractive. I'll find it even more interesting to see how much of a factor that is in the future for free agents, etc.
If Levis already has coaches around the NFL excited to come work with him, I'd imagine players around the NFL would also be excited to come play with him. We hear all the time from wide receivers how important it is to be playing with an elite quarterback. That could mean the Titans are a hot spot right now, especially with the salary cap space they have available.
