NASHVILLE – When the Tennessee Titans traded quarterback Malik Willis to the Green Bay Packers at the end of training camp, it felt like a no-brainer that Tennessee would replace Willis with a different practice squad QB.

Brian Callahan, Ran Carthon, and the Titans' decision makers clearly didn't feel strongly enough about keeping a third quarterback on the active 53-man roster. But it's traditional thinking to have a third guy in the QB room and running scout team.

But after shipping Willis to Green Bay, the Titans made the unorthodox decision to roll with only two quarterbacks in the organization. Will Levis and Mason Rudolph are the only quarterbacks under contract with the Titans.

The Titans are the only team in the NFL without at least three quarterbacks in the organization. Between the active roster, practice squad, and Injured Reserve, only having two QBs leaves Tennessee shockingly thin at the position.

With Levis currently nursing an AC joint injury in his throwing shoulder, that may seem like a problem. But as Callahan pointed out to Titans media earlier this week, Tennessee's decision to roll with two quarterbacks is actually paying off even more now that Levis is hurt.

"The benefit is that Mason [Rudolph] gets all the reps on the scout team and that's his practice because Will [Levis] takes all the starter reps in the normal flow of practice. It's also allowed us to have another player on the practice squad that can help us," said Callahan in Tuesday's press conference.

The Titans are able to get Mason Rudolph more looks in practice because he gets every rep for the scout team. Rudolph is well prepared to take over when his number is called just like it was on Monday Night Football in Miami.

Two quarterbacks also allows the Titans to hold an additional spot on the practice squad for a player at a different position. Tennessee has max elevated from the practice squad in every week of the regular season thus far, and they clearly need the help with the way the special teams unit has performed.

Callahan said that the Titans have brought in some quarterbacks for a workout and would consider adding a third QB if there is concern that Levis' shoulder injury will linger beyond the bye week. Tennessee obviously does not want to play the Colts with only one healthy quarterback.

But up to this point, the Titans haven't been moved by any quarterback workouts to sign somebody. They remain content with the duo of Levis and Rudolph.
