Why Mason Rudolph gives the Titans what they've been looking for all season
A quarterback change should bring stability
NASHVILLE — Quarterback Mason Rudolph will start for the Tennessee Titans (3-11) in Week 16. Incumbent Will Levis was benched for performance in a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals where he was solely responsible for four total turnovers.
Coach Brian Callahan decided to take punitive measures with Levis, and called the benching a "week-to-week" proposition.
Mason Rudolph can bring stability to the Titans
Benching Levis, a player whom the coaching staff has been steadfast in supporting, signals that Callahan and Co. are now coaching for their jobs.
Rudolph is far from Tennessee's long-term solution. He does, however, bring more consistency to an offense that coughed up 24 points last week because of Levis' high variance.
"Yeah, that's what we've been looking for all season," Callahan said on Friday. "Being able to execute consistently over the course of multiple drives. We've had moments where we've had good drives, then we've had a three-and-out or we've had a turnover. We're trying to find ways to be more consistent drive to drive, and that's one of the things that we hope that's the case."
The Titans will try and get right with Rudolph at the helm on the road this week against the Indianapolis Colts (6-8).
Rudolph has appeared in five games for Tennessee this season with three starts.
Filling in for Levis earlier this season while the second-year quarterback dealt with an injury to his throwing shoulder, Rudolph largely managed the situation as best he could. The veteran is responsible for two of the team's three victories on the year, and has kept the Titans competitive. Rudolph has completed 63% of his passes this year for 1,015 yards with six touchdowns against five interceptions.
Against Cincinnati, Rudolph was 21-of-26 (80%) for 209 yards. He threw for two scores, and was picked off once by the Bengals.
"Indy's got a good defense, they're a challenge," said Callahan. "I mean, they've got a good front, they've got good linebackers. And so, we're going to have to do a good job of maintaining those drives. Going to try to stay out of some of those rush packages they have on third-and-seven-plus, they do a nice job. They don't give them many conversions. So, staying manageable, staying on schedule is important in this game."
Rudolph gives Tennessee the best chance to do exactly that.
