The Tennessee Titans kicked off their mandatory minicamp this week and Will Levis continues to look great in every facet of his game. The defense found some success in 7-on-7 and 11s later in the practice sessions Tuesday, but overall Levis led the offense well. Year two has already been good to Levis as he's improving as a passer, a leader, and professional.
Today at the podium, Levis shared some of the little things he's focusing on to make sure that he and the offense take big steps forward this fall. And it seems like they're already paying off.
Will Levis tweaking mechanics
This spring as Levis has been working through the timing of the new offense and his own throwing process he and the staff collaborated to work on a few things with his mechanics. When asked about the changes, Levis shared his thoughts with the media today (in post below):
"Quarterbacks are weirdos. We're always tweaking with something…If you feel like something might be off…you saw [Tom] Brady go through ten full different footworks throughout one season…Ball wasn't coming out the way that I would have liked it to, and we just started looking at what could potentially be the cause of it…just been messing around with things specifically with my base that I feel like I've gotten to a good spot."
Levis went on to talk through his release point that will be a bit higher on certain throws to improve on specific angles and trajectories that should help him continue to take steps as a passer in 2024. He and the coaching staff are working hard to improve on every little aspect of Levis' game so he is the best version of himself by the time the season starts.
Levis and new starting center Cushenberry growing together
Last season the Titans led the league in false starts and had a litany of offensive line woes, but this spring has been quite different. General manager Ran Carthon brought in some key offensive line pieces, including new starting center Lloyd Cushenberry, and Levis is already growing with him as the offensive line improves together.
Levis talked through his relationship with Cushenberry and the steps they're taking this spring thanks to the new center's leadership:
It's been good. We've been hammering [the whole offensive line]…we're not going to hold back when it come [pre-snap[ cadences…Can't be the team we were last year…leading the league in false starts is not going to get it done…[Cushenberry]'s leading that group, has a lot of great experience, and has a really good hold on our protection system and our point system…He's been great for me. He's been great for everyone else in the offense, and I feel really comfortable with him."
Levis and Cushenberry are both emerging as important team leaders who will be the ones to right the ship in 2024. Being on the same page with each other for every cadence, protection, and leading the the team to develop a disciplined approach to implementing Brian Callahan's new scheme will be key to overall Titans success.
Levis went on to talk about how his second year's "full offseason" of work has allowed him to take important next steps. And according to him, if he "keeps handling this second year the right way" everything else will fall into place. The Titans offense and Will Levis are on the right track. Hopefully it's enough to translate into several more wins here soon.
