The Jets’ Week 8 victory over Bengals was extra special for the organization, and Aaron Glenn detailed why
Remembering a legendary Jets player
The New York Jets organization suffered a tragic and devastating loss before their Week 8 game, as it was announced that longtime center Nick Mangold passed away at the age of 41 after battling kidney disease.
So, when the team took the field for their game on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, it was clear that this one meant a little bit more.
Following the team’s first win of the season, Glenn took a moment to speak about Mangold and everything he did for the organization at the beginning of his postgame press conference.
“I didn’t play with him, but I was here as a scout when he was playing and he was the heart and soul of the team,” Glenn said (via Pro Football Talk). “He had a number of kids and it’s always tough to hear that, especially a guy who’s a true Jet through and through — that made his appearance felt. Prayers go out to him and his family. It’s tough to hear because of who he was as person, him being a true Jet.”
Glenn also spoke about Mangold in his postgame speech to the team.
“I didn’t play with this player obviously,” Glenn told the team. “But he is a Jet through and through. He had a number of kids. That touches me every time, a member of this organization, especially somebody that put their heart and soul into making this team a winning team, that has passed away. I just wanted to acknowledge that first and foremost. Make sure you keep his family in your prayers. Please do that.”
Nick Mangold opened up about his battle with kidney disease earlier this month
In a letter to fans, Mangold revealed that he had begun dialysis treatments while waiting for a kidney transplant.
“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” he said. “After a rough summer, I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time.”
With that, he also reached out to the community asking for a donor as he didn’t “have any family able to donate at this time.”
The message was posted on Oct. 14, but Mangold tragically passed away on Oct. 25.
