The Washington Commanders have a top-5 salary cap room in the NFL this offseason, and now they need to be active and make big moves in free agency.

The Commanders are a prime candidate to be linked to some of the bigger names after a disastrous 2025 season and a very conservative offseason last year. General manager Adam Peters has all the pressure on him this year, and he has to change his approach and add real talent to the roster finally.

They made the coaching changes needed to improve the defense, with Daronte Jones taking over as defensive coordinator, but now they need the talent on the field. ESPN has the Commanders as the best fit for one top LB in free agency this offseason.

ESPN lists the Commanders as the best fit for LB Quay Walker

The Commanders need to fix the defense, and they have a great opportunity to do so in free agency. This isn’t the best group of players in free agency this offseason, but they still need to make calculated moves and find younger rising players instead of one-year deals for older veterans again.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen has the Commanders as the best team for LB Quay Walker, who could replace veteran Bobby Wagner, and be a key part of Jones’ defense.

The Commanders need to get younger, and Walker is only 26 when the season starts. Walker could also be an ascending player who comes to Washington and continues to rise. Washington wants to get younger and faster, and Walker would provide that on defense.

Why Quay Walker is a good fit for the Commanders

The Commanders have to replace Wagner this offseason, and Walker would be a great addition to Jones’ defense. Frankie Luvu should be back to himself under Jones’ direction, and Walker playing alongside him could make for a great duo with Jordan Magee rotating in as well.

Walker is a former first-round pick who racks up tackles for the Green Bay Packers, but he’s also been a liability in coverage at times. His career has been very up and down, but he posted 128 tackles in 2025, and looking for a new deal as a younger player on the market.

Walker is the type of player the Commanders need to target this offseason, with a projected market of $10-$12 million per year this offseason, instead of just two or three big swings that use the majority of the salary cap.

The Commanders’ salary cap will go quicker than people realize, even if they free up more before free agency and re-sign some of their own. Signing more younger, cheaper players who they can get the most out of while developing will go a long way toward building for the future, and finally having a stable roster.
