Latest 2026 NFL mock draft has Commanders making controversial selection that fits their needs
NFL Draft expert Daniel Jeremiah has the Commanders selecting LB Sonny Styles with the No. 7 overall pick, which will divide the fan base.
The Washington Commanders are hitting the ground running as the NFL Draft season kicks off, and mock drafts will be flying off the press from now until April.
General manager Adam Peters was at the 2026 Panini Senior Bowl, getting a close look at some of the top draft prospects. In the meantime, NFL Draft experts are weighing in on who the Commanders should take with the No. 7 overall pick in the draft, and one selection might divide the fan base.
Daniel Jeremiah has the Commanders taking LB Sonny Styles at pick No. 7
There’s still plenty of time between now and the NFL Draft in April, but we already have an idea of where certain prospects will go. Free agency will obviously change certain teams’ approach, but it’ll be hard to pass up on certain talent in a very weak draft class.
Teams will have to take who they think will actually hit, and the Commanders could be one of those teams with a top-10 draft pick. NFL Network’s NFL Draft expert Daniel Jeremiah has the Commanders taking LB Sonny Styles from Ohio State, who fills a need while also being one of the top players in the draft.
Taking a LB with the No. 7 overall pick might seem like a mistake for a lot of fans, especially the ones who remember Jamin Davis, but there’s no doubt that Styles could be the best player on the board.
Why Sonny Styles would be a great pick at No. 7 overall for the Commanders
We all know the Commanders’ defense was one of the worst in the league last year, and hopefully, new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones can revamp it in his first season. Jones’ defense is different than what the Commanders have run, which was needed, and Styles is the perfect fit for it.
Styles could be the top linebacker on the team, capable of doing it all in Jones’ defense. He’s 6-5, 243 pounds, and an athletic freak who can move in space. Styles thrives in coverage as a former safety, and he’s just as stout in the run game with only two missed tackles on the season, which didn’t happen until the College Football Playoff.
He’s still just 21 years old as well until next season, so he’s still a rising prospect, which is exactly what you want in the draft. Ohio State also used him on pass-rushing snaps, so he would get looks everywhere. Jones needs his linebackers to play every role on defense, and Styles would be his dream prospect in this draft.
