3 impactful moves the Washington Commanders can make after cutting down to the 53-man roster, including filling an empty roster spot
Adam Peters can still make these impactful moves.
The cutdown to a 53-man roster is complete for the Washington Commanders, but they aren’t done yet, according to the roster. There have been a couple of needs that the team should address, and maybe a surplus at a certain position can collect extra draft capital as well.
Don’t be surprised if Adam Peters gets back to work this week and makes some more roster moves as the team gets ready for Week 1.
1) Add a Wide Receiver

The Commanders only kept five wide receivers after the roster cuts, so there will absolutely be another one added, and the WR market is plentiful. There are a lot of young wide receivers that will be available on waivers if they fall to the Commanders, including Malachi Corley and Trey Palmer, and the youth would help build the future of the roster as well.
If they want to go the veteran route and have someone they can depend on, they can add an available free agent or trade for a WR like Kendrick Bourne for a draft pick or player swap (more on that in the next section). I’ll have a follow-up article listing all of the wide receivers to watch for, but there’s no doubt they will add a sixth option.
2) Trade a corner?…..
The cornerback room is the best it’s been in a long time, and that might help the Commanders net another draft pick. According to reports, the Commanders have been checking interest from other teams about CB Noah Igbinoghene, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Jonathan Jones has interest as well. There are plenty of teams that need a corner like the Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, and Patriots, and the market is inflated right now due to the need. Supply meets demand.
Would it be smart to trade either CB that can step in and play if someone like Marshon Lattimore gets hurt again? It depends on the draft compensation that the Commanders get back. They already traded Brian Robinson Jr. for a sixth-round pick, bringing the total to six picks in the 2026 NFL draft, and they could always use more if it’s worth trading depth for. They can also claim a new CB like Jalyn Armour-Davis or JuJu Brents.
3) Bring in a kicker to compete

The kicker position is still just as stressful as ever, and Matt Gay going two for four in the preseason didn’t help at all. The Commanders gave Gay the biggest one-year deal for a kicker, and it’s fully guaranteed, but taking the loss now is better than taking a loss during the season.
The roster cuts around the league made a lot of kickers available due to close kicking competition, and the commanders have some serious options. The New England Patriots released Parker Romo, who can really kick, and he made a 57-yarder in the preseason. Many other veterans will be a hot commodity, and the Commanders need to act fast and bring someone in to push Gay.
The Commanders still have plenty of possible moves they can make, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they bring in another WR to take the sixth spot and a kicker to compete for the starting spot. Collecting another draft pick, either now or at the trade deadline, would be beneficial as well.
