The Washington Commanders learned from their past mistakes and finally negotiated a massive contract extension during free agency.

We saw general manager Adam Peters and WR Terry McLaurin face off in a contract holdout that lasted all offseason and ended right before the season started. That holdout ended up being more costly than the contract itself, and it was a disastrous season.

Peters didn’t want to do that anymore, and he took care of business with the most important extension of the offseason.

Commanders extend LT Laremy Tunsil

The Commanders need to be aggressive in building around QB Jayden Daniels, and that includes supporting his offensive line. They’ve already made notable moves like releasing starting center Tyler Biadasz, and they could lose LG Chris Paul in free agency. In the meantime, the Commanders are extending their franchise LT Laremy Tunsil to a two-year, $60.2 million deal.

The new deal makes Tunsil the highest-paid left tackle in the league on a per-year basis at $30.1 million.

Extending Tunsil was the most important move of the offseason, and not letting it drag longer than needed was even more important. Now, they won’t have that offseason distraction like they did last offseason. Tunsil is sticking around until 2028, and he deserves every penny after trading a haul of NFL Draft picks for him last offseason.

Laremy Tunsil exceeded expectations as a Commander

Tunsil wasn’t just good last season; he was dominant, even in a nightmare season for the Commanders. He could’ve easily made the Pro Bowl and All-Pro after the numbers he put up last season. Tunsil played in 490 pass-blocking snaps in 2025, and he only allowed two sacks and 15 pressures all season, even with multiple QBs in the backfield throughout the season.

Tunsil was much better than expected in the running game as well, and instantly became a leader and mentor in the locker room. His influence rubbed off on first-round pick RT Josh Conerly Jr, and he finished the season strong after a rough start. Tunsil is also a fan favorite now, and he’s sticking around for the long haul.

All eyes are now on what the Commanders do at center, and if they lose Paul in free agency, and how they respond if so. The left tackle position is secured, but not every question has been answered on the offensive line yet.
