Commanders waive former first round pick

The Commanders have waived former first round linebacker Jamin Davis. This move comes after the team tried to move him to an edge rusher before this season.

Washington selected him with the 19th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He hits waivers for other NFL teams to pursue.

Davis flashed at times during the preseason, even grabbing a sack. That being said, his impact was nonexistent so far during the regular season. He totaled just thirteen tackles through five games played for Washington in 2024.

It's also fair to believe that the Commanders probably tried to trade him in recent weeks, to a team looking for more defensive depth. There was not enough interest there, if so.

Not to mention, Washington has suffered some notable injuries to their defensive line in recent weeks, including to star Jonathan Allen.

Dorance Armstrong, another DL starter, is dealing with an injury as well. Seventh-round rookie Javontae Jean-Baptiste is on injured reserve, alongside Allen, too. The depth is not impressive, so moving on from Davis is a strong statement by Washington.

The Commanders made multiple adjustments to Davis' role throughout his tenure with their defense, but nothing ever seemed to truly unlock him as an NFL player. Now, he will look for a new opportunity elsewhere.
