The Commanders’ defense hit a new low after embarrassing play against Lions, and changes need to be made
Dan Quinn needs to make a change after the latest embarrassing play during loss to Lions.
The Washington Commanders continue to have one of the worst defenses in the league, and it hit a new low in the loss to the Detroit Lions.
Head coach Dan Quinn has preached about changes coming, and the only real move made was defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. coming down to the field to call plays this week, which fixed nothing. The Lions moved down the field with ease, and frustrations started to mount for the Commanders before tempers started to flare.
That’s when one play happened that sums up the Commanders’ defense over the last few weeks, and a real change needs to be made.
Daron Payne was ejected for throwing a punch
The defense gave up three touchdowns on the first three drives of the game, and players started to get frustrated after another week of getting blown out early. The Lions punched in their third touchdown, and defensive tackle Daron Payne threw a punch at star wide receiver Amon-Ra St.Brown when he walked past Payne, which led to him getting ejected.
Payne has been one of the best defenders, if not the best defender, on the team this season, and now your top player is showing how frustrated the players are by throwing a punch. That’s a new low for the defense, and Quinn can quickly lose the team if this continues without a change.
The coaching staff isn’t the only one to blame, and the players have looked bad for almost the entire season now, but they look unmotivated and as if they don’t believe in what they’re doing on the field.
Payne’s punch wasn’t the only sign, and Javon Kinlaw was flagged after the next play for pushing an official away, and he’s honestly lucky he wasn’t ejected, too.
Quan Martin was flagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty a few drives later, and players are taking their frustrations out on the field. Multiple players who were good last year took a major step back this season, including Mike Sainristil, and it’s been disappointing. Something needs to happen with the season’s remaining games.
The Commanders need some kind of hope moving forward
The playoffs aren’t an option right now, and the Commanders need to think about fixing this roster for the long haul. The defense needs an overhaul in the offseason, and they need to see what young players they can build around.
Continuing to watch players struggle week after week is malpractice, and your best player getting ejected for throwing a punch, on top of many other unsportsmanlike penalties and getting blown out at home again, should be the final straw to make a change.
