The blows just keep coming for the Washington Commanders after a nightmare of a loss against the Green Bay Packers.

The game was riddled with injuries for both teams, which is a major factor in why people hate the quick turnaround of Thursday night games. The Commanders had many players go down during the game, but the scariest came when a key defender went down and had to leave on the medical cart.

The bad news continued today as we learned just how significant the injury was for starting defensive end Deatrich Wise.

Wise is out for the season

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said he would provide updates on all of the injuries on Monday, but we quickly learned on Friday that Wise will now miss the rest of the season with a quad injury that requires surgery.

Wise was questionable coming into the game with a knee injury, but was cleared to play, and he went down on an unfortunate routine play on special teams. He was out for an extra point attempt by the Packers, and he pushed through the line to try to block the kick, and a Packers offensive lineman fell backwards onto his leg.

The players on the field took a knee, and the Commanders’ bench cleared as his teammates came out to show support. We could see veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner in the background, by Wise telling him, “Wise, we got you! We got you, Wise!”

He was loaded onto the medical cart to leave the field and was clearly very emotional. Wise posted a message on Instagram that he is in good spirits despite the unfortunate news. This is a devastating injury for the defense, but it’s good to see him hold his head high.

Next man up

The season goes on, though, and the Commanders’ defense needs someone to step up. We can expect more Jacob Martin and second-year defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste to get more reps with Wise out. The Commanders could also try to bring in extra help with an available free agent, which I’ll write about in a separate article.

The defense as a whole looked as bad as it could against the Packers, and the schedule doesn’t get any easier. The team needs to spend the time off during this mini bye week to regroup and fix the errors before taking on the Las Vegas Raiders.
