The Commanders won’t make a needed change after Cowboys loss, and it will end up backfiring as the season progresses

Now is the time for the Commanders to make a change before it’s too late.

The Washington Commanders’ defense should be the main topic of everything I write until we see something different, but it’s not expected to improve anytime soon.

Every single week, we see the same results from the Commanders’ defense of giving up explosive plays and going down early in the game. Head coach Dan Quinn always says the same response of “we’re going to look at it” after a game, but he was more frustrated after the Cowboys’ loss than he has been in the past.

Maybe changes will finally be made, but the early indications are that nothing will happen during the season, and it would be a massive mistake by Quinn.

Will the Commanders make a change?

People need answers after that kind of showing against the Cowboys, but will anything actually happen? Quinn said that he doesn’t ever think about a change in playcalling or anything, and that he’s in the headset for both sides of the ball during the game. The whole press conference sounded like no actual changes would be coming anytime soon.

ESPN’s John Keim also said on his podcast that he personally doesn’t believe that the team would fire defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. during the season. Now he’s not saying they won’t, but he doesn’t see the team pulling the trigger, but what other option is there? Linebacker coach Ken Norton Jr. should take over duties for the rest of the year, and the defense needs to be evaluated top to bottom, with changes coming along the way, and another offseason of work ahead.

The defense has hit rock bottom

After seven games, it’s fair to say that the defense is the clear weakness of the team, and more specifically, the back seven of the linebackers and the secondary. Giving up 44 points and over 400 yards against the Cowboys should be enough to make a change. The defense is killing the rest of the team’s efforts, and that showed when they allowed a touchdown in just 35 seconds right before halftime. That kind of performance will deflate the offense that just drove down the field to cut the deficit to only five points with only 45 seconds left before halftime.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. We have officially hit the insanity mark of the season for the defense. I get the injuries and a lack of skill at certain positions, but the results are reaching an embarrassing level, especially when you have players running into each other in coverage for a 74-yard touchdown to CeeDee Lamb.

Something has to change, whether it is coaching or the players on the field steadily making awful mistakes, but the team can’t sustain the liabilities of the defense with the schedule they have coming up. The Commanders have the Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks, and Detroit Lions coming up next, and it wouldn’t shock me if a change happens on defense if those three games are losses.
