The Commanders take another major blow after promising young player suffers significant injury
The Commanders continue to take hits with another major injury.
The losses and injuries continue to pile up for the Washington Commanders in a nightmare season that should be a wake-up call.
The defense has reached historically bad territory after being the worst in the league over the last four weeks. Injuries have hurt this defense, but it’s not a good enough excuse, and head coach Dan Quinn finally made a change by taking over as defensive coordinator.
As soon as Quinn announced a change, he followed it up with more terrible news on the defense, with yet another significant injury.
Rookie cornerback Trey Amos suffered a broken fibula
Quinn announced today that rookie cornerback Trey Amos suffered a broken fibula and will miss significant time, which could be the rest of the season.
“Finally, I’ll end on some tough news on the injury front,” Quinn said. Trey Amos fractured his fibula, and that will knock him out for a while, so he will miss some significant time.
The blowout loss to the Detroit Lions went off the rails after Daron Payne got ejected for throwing a punch at Amon-Ra St.Brown, which led to a one-game suspension, and Javon Kinlaw pushed an official, and that was just the beginning. Amos also went down on the play where Payne was ejected, and he had to be helped off the field.
Trey Amos has been a bright spot on defense
Even with the defense being the worst in the league, Amos has been the only bright spot in the entire secondary. He had a really rough game against the Seattle Seahawks, just like everyone else, but if you take away that one game, he’s been phenomenal this year. If you take the Seahawks game away, Amos has only allowed 18 catches for 223 yards and zero touchdowns on the worst defense in the league.
The Commanders need to keep rebuilding this offseason, and seeing how well their young players perform is the top priority for the rest of the season, with the playoff hopes a distant memory. Losing Amos is a massive loss with drastic changes coming to the defense this offseason, but at least you know he can be a starting corner in this league, and one less position the team has to worry about.
General manager Adam Peters only has six draft picks for the 2026 NFL Draft, so he needs as many young players from the previous draft to be a hit, and Amos is definitely one of those players to build around.
