Commanders finally found replacement for highly regarded coach who was poached from team this offseason
The Commanders continue to build David Blough’s first offense by promoting from within to replace Brian Johnson.
The Washington Commanders’ offseason has already been filled with many changes to the coaching staff and on the roster, with many more ahead.
The offense has had the majority of the changes after David Blough took over as the new offensive coordinator, and he built a young staff around him. The Commanders also made the shocking move to release Tyler Biadasz, and this is just the beginning of the madness.
Before the Commanders make moves in free agency, they had to finalize the coaching staff, which took a major step after replacing a key assistant coach who was poached.
Commanders announced David Raih as the new passing game coordinator
The Commanders had to surround Blough with a solid support staff, and that staff took a hit by Kingsbury himself. Kingsbury finally found his new home with the Los Angeles Rams as the Assistant Head Coach to revive his career under Sean McVay. In that same announcement, we learned that Kingsbury brought Brian Johnson over with him, leaving a void on the staff.
Now, the Commanders had to find their new passing game coordinator for Blough, and they’ve promoted TE coach David Raih as the new guy in line.
Why David Raih will be important next season
Blough will be installing a new offensive scheme next season and also calling plays for the first time in his career. Raih has been coaching in the NFL since 2014, and he’s been the tight end coach for the Commanders over the last two seasons. Having a veteran coaching presence around will be massive after losing Johnson, and it gives Blough someone to lean on when needed.
The Commanders also have a major question mark at the tight end position with veteran Zach Ertz as a free agent, and Ben Sinnott and Jon Bates left on the roster. The coaching staff needs to continue to develop Sinnott heading into his third season, but also look for their next TE1 this offseason. Whoever they add in free agency or the NFL Draft, they need to be a big piece of the offense and a reliable weapon for Jayden Daniels.
The Commanders also need to look for a new TE coach as soon as possible, and it’s expected.
