The injuries have been steady this season, and the Washington Commanders have had to adjust many times by bringing in new faces.

They’ve already added multiple veterans, such as Preston Smith and Darnell Savage, but they may not be finished with another long-term injury on defense. Javontae Jean-Baptiste was hoping to be a contributor on the defensive line when Deatrich Wise went down for the season, but now he’s also out for a long time.

Adam Peters is hosting a familiar face soon, who can bring some upside as one of the youngest free agents available, while filling in a need that’s growing thin by the week.

Commanders hosting former second-round pick Drake Jackson

The Commanders are reaching out to a familiar face and hosting defensive end Drake Jackson, who was drafted 61st overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2022, and is returning to action for the first time in a while.

Jackson was starting to hit his groove in 2023 with 14 pressures and three sacks in eight games, but then he suffered a knee injury that he’s just now coming back from.

He unfortunately missed the rest of the 2023 season and all of 2024, and was waived by the 49ers in May as he recovered. Doctors have cleared him, and he is setting up visits with teams, including the Commanders, Baltimore Ravens, and New York Jets.

The Commanders need Jackson in a big way

He hasn’t played in quite some time, but he’s still only 24 years old and brings a lot of potential and intrigue. The Commanders’ defense is down its top-two defensive ends on one side of the line, and it needs help while Smith gets acclimated to the defense. Jackson can also line up all over the defensive line at 6-foot-4, 275 pounds, and Washington needs the youth as well after signing multiple free agents in their last seasons of their careers.

You never know what he will look like coming off of an intense knee injury, but he’s worth taking the flyer on with the injuries and lack of depth on the line. Peters tried to swing on wide receiver Kendrick Bourne just a few weeks ago and missed out, and hopefully, they can land Jackson if all goes well, and he impresses during his workout.
