The Washington Commanders have been one of the many teams dealing with injuries to start the season, and they’ve had to rely on a lot of depth players.

Injuries are just part of the game, and the season doesn’t stop when players miss time. You have to keep fighting with who you have. There have been many times this offseason, and even through the first four games, when the Commanders have had to turn to a younger player to step in and show they can handle an increased role.

Luke McCaffrey was one of the players heading into the season with a microscope on him, as people await his breakout, and it might be happening before our eyes.

Luke McCaffrey is stacking weeks

This offseason, the Commanders’ wide receiver room had to navigate through Terry McLaurin’s contract extension and missed time by Noah Brown due to injury, which gave depth players a stage to really prove themselves. McCaffrey was going into his second season and needed to show growth in his development, and we’re starting to see it now.

After getting his first touchdown last week against the Las Vegas Raiders, McCaffrey found the endzone once again this Sunday. He only had 21 yards this week after having 56 the last game, but the touchdown itself showed that he’s learning how to run his routes and get open. The Commanders came out in a bunch formation, and McCaffrey faked like he was going to the outside, but cut across the middle of the endzone and snuck behind the defenders.

We’re not sure how long the Commanders will be without McLaurin and Brown, so McCaffrey could continue to get valuable snaps on offense moving forward. Scoring a touchdown in back-to-back weeks is another way to make sure you stay on the field. The athleticism was always there as a prospect; he just needed to put everything together as a wide receiver since he hadn’t played the position for that long.

  • Ran an elite 4.02 short shuttle

Making his impact on special teams

The offense isn’t the only side of the ball where McCaffrey is taking advantage of his opportunities; he’s found his groove on special teams with the new kickoff rules. Head coach Dan Quinn has been very passionate about the new kickoff rules, and the results have been impactful to start the season. We’ve seen running backs and wide receivers getting reps in the kick return, and none have been better than McCaffrey.

According to the Commanders’ PR staff, McCaffrey’s 199 kick return yards on Sunday were the most by a player this season, and the most since Deebo Samuel had 208 yards in 2024. It’s also the most for the franchise since former returner Brandon Banks had 213 return yards in 2010.

The Commanders’ special teams returns have been one of the best in the league to start the season, with a punt return for a touchdown, and multiple kick returns by Samuel and McCaffrey giving the offense outstanding field position to start the drive.

McCaffrey’s recent breakout on offense and special teams came at the perfect time, with McLaurin and Brown dealing with injuries that left a void in the wide receiver room, and hopefully, the trend continues for the remainder of the season.
