We are officially a week away from the 2024 NFL Draft and per his own words, Washington Commanders general manager, Adam Peters, expects to know who he's taking with second overall pick in the first round.
"We're real close," Peters told the media on Thursday. "… We have a few more things. DQ [Dan Quinn] and I will huddle up and probably have an answer, sometime next week. Now, I will say this also, you don't really need to make a decision until you need to make a decision. So, there's no rush with that.
"I think we'll have a pretty good idea of what we're doing [at No. 2] early next week."
So, who's the guy? Well, the current betting favorite is Heisman Trophy winner and former LSU Tigers quarterback, Jayden Daniels. Per BetMGM, Daniels' odds of landing in Washington are (-400) and Drake Maye, the next favorite is (+220). That's a rather large discrepancy between first and second place, currently.
The soon-to-be NFL rookie threw more than 40 touchdown passes and ran for more than 1,000 yards in 2023 – but it's not just his dual-threat ability that makes him such an exciting prospect.
Daniels' deep ball, his ability to hit throws on all three levels of the field, and his overall work ethic are elite traits, in their own right. He appears to be hitting his stride when it comes to his development as a football player, which is obviously an ideal situation for new Commanders offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury.
Given that Daniels' ceiling is as a true dual-threat quarterback, his vast skillset could pair well with what Kliff Kingsbury likes to do offensively and he will be instantly met with a solid supporting cast. On paper, this could be a quite favorable situation for Daniels out of the gate. – Crissy Froyd, A to Z Sports Draft Analyst
After weeks of evaluations and digging, things are finally coming to a close. At this point, it's pretty much a lock that the Commanders are taking Daniels at No. 2, unless something crazy happens.
