The injury bug has gotten the best of the Washington Commanders’ roster, including star players Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin, but things could be headed in the right direction, finally.

It’s been a rough two weeks with multiple starters out on both sides of the ball, and the team needs as many players back as possible with a tough schedule coming up, including three away opponents in the next four games.

The positive news of players on their way returning also comes with the unfortunate loss of a young player who was starting to find his groove as a contributor.

Javontae Jean-Baptiste is out for a while

The Commanders have already lost veteran defensive end Deatrich Wise for the season, and second-year player Javontae Jean-Baptiste was finally getting a chance to show himself, and he stepped in and contributed right away. He finished the game against the Atlanta Falcons as the second-highest graded player on defense, but suffered a torn pec that will sideline him for a long time.

Head coach Dan Quinn addressed the injury today when he spoke to the media, and let everyone know that it doesn’t look good, but the full length of his absence is unknown for now.

“Some tough news on Javante, Jean Baptiste,” Quinn said. “Pec injury, and that will knock him out for a while. . .It’ll head him to injured reserve, as far as we know. Until he has the surgery, I don’t think they’ll know, to the extent of what that could look like. So that’s what I meant, will have a better sense after he goes through the, you know, the procedure. But a torn pec is usually something that’s months, not weeks, and we’re bummed for him. He’s worked hard to come back from injuries and is starting to make his move again. So definitely a setback for him and a blow for us as well.”

Help is coming for the Commanders

Even though the Commanders received unfortunate news on Jean-Baptiste, Quinn says that everything is trending in the right direction for Daniels, McLaurin, and multiple other starters.

“You’ll probably also ask about Jayden,” Quinn added. “He had a strong workout here Saturday, and we’ll take today and tomorrow and work out his practice plan, go through the whole process with him this week, medically, how he feels, how he practices, and give you the updates on Wednesday. I’d say we’re all trending in the right space on there. We’ll have a better update on Wednesday in terms of practice planning and that, but arrows are heading up for a number of the guys.”

Daniels is obviously the most important injury for the team right now with his ability to mask roster flaws, and reports on Sunday said that he’s expected to return against the Los Angeles Chargers. McLaurin seems like he avoided disaster, and Brown, John Bates, and several others seem to be coming back soon, which is needed now more than ever with a tough slate coming up.

Quinn said he will provide more updates on all of the injuries on Wednesday, and hopefully, it will include these starters practicing on a full basis before the team hits the road again, which the team has struggled with in a big way this season.
