Commanders’ loss to Chiefs was headlined by a key factor that they haven’t been able to avoid all year, and it’s killing the season
The Commanders’ season hasn’t gone as planned, and this isn’t even their fault.
The Washington Commanders lost another game in frustrating fashion to the Kansas City Chiefs, and it feels like we keep watching the same results every week.
The losses are due to many factors, including all three phases of the ball, but no factor is out of their control, and it’s becoming a weekly occurrence that’s putting their season goals out of reach. You can only control what you can control, and the injuries are reaching a point where key players are missing games for periods of time they didn’t last year.
The Commanders had multiple injuries on Monday night, which might be too much to overcome with a difficult schedule ahead.
Laremy Tunsil left the game early
One player who has been healthy this season is stonewall left tackle Laremy Tunsil, but he left the game early with a hamstring injury, and Brandon Coleman stepped in at left tackle after being active for the first time since Week 2.
Tunsil tried to return, but ultimately changed into street clothes at halftime and remained out for the rest of the game.
The Commanders need Tunsil out there protecting the blindside of whoever is throwing the ball next week, especially if it’s Jayden Daniels, who is recovering from his own hamstring injury and missed the game against the Chiefs. Coleman looked good at first glance, but Tunsil is still one of the best in the league.
Terry McLaurin’s quad will be a headline all week, again
Commanders’ star wide receiver Terry McLaurin finally made his return in Week 8 after missing the last four games, and he made the big plays we were hoping for.
McLaurin scored the first touchdown to tie the game, 7-7, at halftime. He followed it up with another diving catch, which may have aggravated his quad injury. McLaurin didn’t come back in the game after that, and trainers looked at him for a while.
After the game, McLaurin said he felt “pretty optimistic” about his injury, but you just never know with those kinds of injuries.
The Commanders need McLaurin and his big-play abilities to have any hopes of going on a run against the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions coming up, and they have a short week now after playing on Monday night.
Javon Kinlaw left banged up
Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw has been one of the team’s best additions, and his energy is felt up front every game. On Sunday night, he was chasing down Mahomes and fully extended for a tackle that just missed him, and he landed with all his weight on his shoulder.
The trainers looked at it and wrapped it up, and kept him out for the rest of the game. He said after the game that thankfully, he was good and could’ve gone back in.
Injuries have been a big factor for teams all season. Still, the Commanders have gotten the short stick with Daniels and McLaurin missing three or more games, and losing players like Deatrich Wise, Dorance Armstrong, and Austin Ekeler for the season, with a handful of others.
