The Washington Commanders secondary finished the 2023 season with just eight interceptions, last year, but second-year safety Quan Martin and the rest of the unit are making it a priority to flip that stat on its head in 2024.

That all starts in practice and Martin, specifically, made one of the wildest interceptions you'll ever see during the Commanders' Wednesday portion of mandatory minicamp.

Martin should be in a better position to snag a lot more picks in 2024

Martin played a decent amount of snaps in 2023 and he appeared in 16 games, making five starts. The Commanders' decision to draft former All-American and collegiate champion Mike Sainristil will move Martin to centerfield, more often, where he'll have a better chance to pick off opposing quarterbacks.

The best part, thought, is the fact Martin is versatile enough to play the slot and Sainristil can play elsewhere in certain packages. Those two, along with Jeremy Chinn and Jeremy Reaves round out a versatile group of defensive backs that Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. can scheme around.

"We'll play where there are three safeties on the field, at times," Quinn told reporters last during the team's OTAs. "And that position has some flow to it. Quan has experience playing nickel and down by the line of scrimmage. Jeremy can come from the top-down and play over tight ends. So, there are unique things they have [and] that's what this part of the year is for – is to find those unique things. I've been really impressed by the two of them, their communication together, but they're not the only ones. You know, you're seeing different guys in different combinations and we'll continue to do that."

In all the Commanders have a lot to figure out when it comes to the secondary, but there are some pieces on the roster that can really help turn things around in 2024 and Martin is certainly one of them.
