The Washington Commanders missed a golden opportunity to fix a major weakness on the roster, and an NFC East rival took advantage
Should the Commanders have made the move?
GM Adam Peters has been aggressive in addressing many positions on the Washington Commanders’ roster, but there’s still work to be done. We’ve seen in training camp and during the first preseason game that the depth at wide receiver might be an issue down the line this season.
Terry McLaurin’s absence has exposed the Commanders’ lack of weapons behind Deebo Samuel and Noah Brown, and they need the young pieces to step up. Adding youth to the wide receiver room with more potential could’ve gone a long way, but the Commanders missed an opportunity to an NFC East rival.
The Eagles do it once again
The Philadelphia Eagles are known for being aggressive and making moves with the surplus of draft picks they’ve collected over the years. One year after trading for WR Jahan Dotson from the Commanders, the Eagles have added another weapon in the WR room by acquiring John Metchie III from the Houston Texans.
Metchie III was being shopped to teams for a week, and the Commanders should’ve been all over it, especially with the trade compensation it took to get the deal done. The Eagles traded TE Harrison Bryant and a 2026 5th-round pick for Metchie III and a 2026 6th-round pick. The Commanders could’ve swapped day-3 picks with the Texans and traded a player like RB Chris Rodriguez Jr. and added a young WR with upside still to be unlocked.
Metchie III was a standout WR at Alabama before he got drafted 44th overall in the 2022 NFL draft. He then missed his entire rookie season as he fought leukemia, and returned to the field just a year later. The Texans continued to go all-in with rebuilding their WR room, and Matchie III could never climb back up the depth chart, making him a trade target for teams.
The Commanders need their draft picks to hit
The Commanders have also been aggressive in adding to their WR room, but there are still a lot of unknowns that remain. Metchie III is just 24 years old, but he also has two years of playing experience under his belt. Meanwhile, the Commanders rely on second-year WR Luke McCaffrey, who is still new to the position, to develop and produce sooner rather than later.

They also drafted WR Jaylin Lane in the 4th round of this year’s draft, and also need him to be a big contributor as a young piece of the offense. Both players are still unknowns at this point, but they also have the breakout potential that Metchie III has. Maybe Peters and the coaching staff have full faith in the development of McCaffrey and Lane, but Metchie III would’ve been a low-risk, potential high-reward type of trade.
We will quickly see how far along the depth of the wide receiver room is developing as the season progresses, and if all else fails, they will go back to the drawing board this offseason. The best-case scenario for the Commanders is that both players hit and show that no other moves need to be made this season.
