The Washington Commanders are looking to bring in a load of new talent after receiving a wake-up call last year with many roster flaws exposed.

They came into the offseason with the most pending free agents, so they had to bring back key players they could build around. We’ve already seen Deatrich Wise and Drake Jackson sign new contracts to return, and now the offense has its first free agent back.

The Commanders are re-signing WR Treylon Burks and hoping he can reach his potential after showing flashes as a late addition last season.

Commanders re-sign WR Treylon Burks before free agency

Before free agency kicks off, the Commanders are locking in depth on offense with a one-year deal worth $4 million for Burks, who produced in a limited time.

The Commanders are looking to get younger, and they may need to look for their new future WR1 with Terry McLaurin’s future beyond 2026 in doubt. It helps when you have a 25-year-old first-round pick on the roster who made highlight reel catches in a short period of time. Burks isn’t a WR1, of course, but he can be valuable depth, which is another area that the Commanders struggled with last season.

Why bringing back WR Treylon Burks was important

Burks was a late addition who didn’t play until Week 9, but he wasted no time making big plays after a highlight-reel one-handed catch against the Denver Broncos. He used his 6-2, 225-pound frame to high-point the ball and bring in an incredible touchdown with his athleticism.

Burks only had 130 yards in his short season, but he also didn’t have a single registered drop on 22 targets, and he averaged 13 yards per reception. Instead of relying on older veterans like Robbie Chosen and Chris Moore again, the Commanders are bringing back Burks, who can actually have a future in Washington.

The Commanders need to turn their attention to swinging big in free agency now and look to land a big weapon like Alec Pierce or Romeo Doubs to build around Jayden Daniels. If they can’t land a big name in free agency, expect Carnell Tate to be on the board at No. 7 overall, even if they do sign Brandon Aiyuk when he’s released, which is very likely.
