The Commanders saw their biggest missed opportunity of the season after one young player makes a statement play in win
Ben Sinnott showed the coaching staff that he deserved more opportunities this season in the receiving game.
The Washington Commanders snapped their losing streak, but only by ignoring their biggest need: playing more of their younger players.
The reality of the team is that they’re 4-10, out of the playoffs, and have more questions than answers about their old roster with so many free agents. This team desperately needs to find some building blocks for next season. Yet, head coach Dan Quinn fails to do so every week, while giving players like Bobby Wagner 100% of snaps.
The Commanders will likely have a new starter at many key positions next season, which will be tough to overcome. They missed a huge opportunity this season by ignoring Ben Sinnott as a threat in the passing game, and he reminded them against the Giants.
Ben Sinnott showed what happens when he gets targets
The Commanders took Sinnott in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and we’re still waiting to see him get a fair share of targets in the passing game. Sinnott has caught all nine targets of his career, including two touchdowns, and against the Giants, he showed that he can be a big-play threat.
Sinnott had a big grab in the fourth quarter that went for 36 yards after a nice run following the catch, which has always been a strength of his. For whatever reason, Kliff Kingsbury fails to give Sinnott more targets, despite him bringing in each one that he does get.
The Commanders will likely move on from Zach Ertz, who is a free agent who also suffered a season-ending ACL injury last week, and they need someone to take over his production.
The Commanders need more production at tight end
With Ertz likely gone or retiring this offseason, Jayden Daniels needs a new weapon, and Sinnott could be one of the options. The Commanders could’ve given Sinnott a real shot this season to show what he could do outside of blocking, but they completely ignored it. Now, they have to scramble to find the next TE1 next season, which could be a free agent like Isaiah Likely or Kyle Pitts.
Regardless of who they add, Sinnott should still get plenty more opportunities to produce as a receiver, not just next season, but in the final three games as well. The list of needs is long, but not building around Daniels, who has had his own nightmare season with injuries, would be a complete failure.
