The Washington Commanders’ season hasn’t gone as planned, and they need to start winning games before their season goals become out of reach.

It hasn’t been all of the team’s fault. The Commanders are one of many teams that have struggled with impactful injuries all year. Washington has been in a rotation of games missed between Jayden Daniels, Terry McLaurin, and Noah Brown, putting the offense in a bad position.

The team has already made many moves to fix the problem, but a better solution has just become available, and the Commanders need to sign them to take Brown’s place as the WR3.

Commanders should sign veteran Tyler Lockett

The Commanders can’t depend on Brown to be a starter, even when he comes back. Plus, we don’t know how healthy McLaurin will be the rest of the season, and even Deebo Samuel has a lingering bruised heel. Tyler Lockett asked to be released by the Tennessee Titans, and he would be a drastic upgrade over Chris Moore.

A team can sign Lockett after 4 p.m. ET on Oct. 22, and I’m sure he will make plenty of visits to teams that need wide receiver help, and the Commanders should be one of them. They’ve already signed Treylon Burks, but we shouldn’t have too high expectations just yet, as he is still younger and has to learn the offense. A 33-year-old veteran player like Lockett can plug and play in the offense like we’ve seen with Robbie Chosen since he was signed.

The season hasn’t gone as Lockett hoped, but over the last few seasons, he’s consistently produced at a high level.

Tyler Lockett’s season stats breakdown

  • 2024: 49 catches, 600 yards, 2 touchdowns
  • 2023: 79 catches, 894 yards, 5 touchdowns
  • 2022: 84 catches, 1,033 yards, 9 touchdowns
  • 2021: 73 catches, 1,175 yards, 8 touchdowns

Commanders’ wide receiver room is getting healthy

Head coach Dan Quinn said McLaurin and Samuel should return to practice this week, but that was said last week as well. Even if they both come back, adding Lockett is a boost that the offense needs. Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane have been developing this season, but Lockett is a reliable target that can help stress the defense with McLaurin and Samuel on the field. He knows how to get open, and he is a clear upgrade over Brown and Moore as the WR3 option.

Of course, this would only be a rental for the rest of the season, but Daniels needs more weapons he can rely on. Burks could be a piece of the future, and the Commanders need to address the position once again in the offseason to get another real playmaker.
