The New York Giants just made a bold move that could heavily impact the future of the Washington Commanders and make the offseason even harder.

It obviously hasn’t been the season anyone expected, and the Commanders are well out of any playoff contention currently. A lot of people are thinking about the offseason already, and rightfully so, with a lot of work to be done. General manager Adam Peters has his most critical offseason ahead since he took over, and he can’t miss on any major moves.

The offseason could become even more difficult for the Commanders, who already need a new defensive coordinator, if the Giants pursue offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury for their head coaching vacancy.

Giants could pursue Kliff Kingsbury as their new head coach

The Giants wasted no time firing head coach Brian Daboll after they lost yet another game they had a lead in against the Chicago Bears, and they promoted offensive coordinator Mike Kafka as interim head coach. There have been questionable calls with Jaxson Dart’s health as well, and Daboll got in trouble for the sideline incident when he went into the tent during a concussion test on Dart. The writing was on the wall, and now the Giants need to find their next head coach. They have hired only offensive-minded coaches since 1983, just like Kliff Kingsbury, and that trend could continue.

Kingsbury showed in his two seasons in Washington that he can create magic on offense with a young quarterback like Jayden Daniels, who is uber talented, and the Giants might want him to do the same with Dart. Daniels’ rookie season was historic, and the team went to the NFC Championship game thanks to Daniels’ playing style and explosive plays on offense. The second season has been riddled with injuries all season, including Daniels and Terry McLaurin, and Kingsbury might be on his way out with many college and NFL opportunities opening up.

DraftKings Sportsbook currently has Kingsbury as the fifth-highest odds to become the Giants’ head coach, and one of the top offensive-minded coaches on the list.

Would Kliff Kingsbury make sense for the Giants?

It all comes down to how much the Giants would want to pursue Kingsbury and if the fit makes sense for them. The Giants absolutely have to get this hire right, so I asked A to Z Sports writer Joe Deleone, who covers the Giants, for his thoughts on their head coaching search.

“The concept of Kingsbury working with Dart is precisely how the Giants need to approach this coaching search. Kingsbury unlocked Jayden Daniels early in his career by effectively adapting his college-style offense to fit Daniels’ skill set. While Dart has flourished early in his career amid a chaotic situation, imagine how good he could be with a playcaller like Kingsbury. Overall, if they take the route of hiring an offensive-minded coach, it needs to be as deliberate as Kingbury’s to establish a long-term plan to leverage his skills and succeed. Dart’s mobility and playmaking may be different from Daniels’, but they can translate quickly. Ultimately, I think other, hotter names will be prioritized over Kingbury, but it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t strongly consider him.” – Joe Deleone, A to Z Sports New York

The Giants will have a pool of names and an enticing market with a great young quarterback and a roster with a lot of potential, and Kingsbury could be one of the coaches they consider to help unlock it all. The next few months of the season will lead up to a very important offseason for the Commanders, and finding a new offensive coordinator could be added to the list.
