The Washington Commanders are signing former Arizona Cardinals HC and USC offensive analyst Kliff Kingsbury as their new OC. This comes after Kingsbury pulled out from being named the Las Vegas Raiders OC in the last couple of days.
HC Dan Quinn has solidified his play-caller to help a talented young offensive unit in DC. Kingsbury is notorious for running his Air Raid offense. He has coached several high-profile quarterbacks in his career. Like, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, and Kyler Murray.
Kingsbury seems like a better NFL OC than he ever was as an HC. Removing the responsibility of leading an entire team should maximize Kingsbury’s effectiveness.
He must maintain his flow and success for a full season. Kingsbury's offenses are known to start hot and flame out towards the end of the season.
Kingsbury’s hiring means trade for Caleb Williams?
As most would speculate, hiring Kingsbury could mean the Commanders are prepared to potentially trade up with the Chicago Bears for Williams. With Kingsbury’s time at USC, he knows as much about Williams as any coach in the NFL.
Of course, to pull off this trade the Bears must be willing to part ways with the 1st overall pick and the chance to draft Williams. It won't be easy, especially considering what sources told A to Z Sports on the state of the No. 1 pick. The expectation around the league is for Chicago to sit tight.
But there's a lot of time between us and the NFL Draft. If the Commanders get the Bears to change their mind, there is no better win-win situation for both organizations.
Caleb Williams returns home?
Williams played high school football in the DC area at Gonzaga High School. He was one of the best players in the region. Williams is a former two-time All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference MVP. Also, he was named Gatorade District of Columbia Football Player of the Year and a MaxPreps Sophomore All-American in 2018.
Williams has a chance for his own “Lebron James storyline." Being drafted to your hometown team where it all began sounds like a storybook beginning to a professional career. Going back to where it all began with the chance to be a franchise changer for a franchise desperately in need of one.
Despite the intrigue, it is an uphill climb for the Commanders to secure a deal to have first dibs at drafting Williams.
Commanders reportedly called Bill Belichick before offering head coaching job to Dan Quinn
Guess it wasn’t a done deal.
