The Jayden Daniels window is officially open in Washington, and general manager Adam Peters is ready to take advantage of that. On Tuesday, ahead of the NFL trade deadline, the Commanders acquired Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints.
Trade details:
- Commanders get: Marshon Lattimore, 2025 5th-round pick
- Saints get: 2025 3rd-round pick, 2025 4th-round pick, Saints 2025 6th back (from the Hassan Ridgeway trade).
The move is particularly intriguing for two reasons. First, the compensation is not insignificant whatsoever, but the Commanders had an extra third-round pick after selling wide receiver Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles back in August and the extra sixth from the Saints themselves. Second, because Lattimore is under contract through 2026.
The Commanders will take only $605k in salary this season. Beyond that, Lattimore is slated to make $18 million in 2025 and $18.5 million in 2026 — nothing after 2024 is guaranteed, even though the cornerback has $2 million roster bonuses in each offseason to force an early decision.
For the Saints, the move signals the potential start of a rebuild (finally). New Orleans actually loses $200k in cap space in 2025. But they open up $605k this year (which rolls over to pay that bill) and open up $28.5 million in 2026, $5.4 million in 2027, and $2.7 million in 2027. It's a relevant first step to do what they should've started doing in 2021.
Marshon Lattimore was a first-round pick in 2017 in what was a historical draft class for the Saints. The cornerback was the defensive rookie of the year in 2017 and has made the Pro Bowl four times (2017, 2019, 2020, 2021).
For the Commanders, it’s a solution for a huge roster role — and that’s how good teams operate to maximize a rookie quarterback window.
