The Washington Commanders are preparing to travel to New England to take on the Patriots for a joint practice and preseason game. But first, the team has one more practice together to prepare for facing a team with a different logo, finally.
There are some notable takeaways with players who were absent at practice and others who took advantage and stood out in drills.
Names not seen on the field
The team has been practicing hard for the last few weeks, and this is the first time they’ve had to travel and prepare to face another team. There were a couple of names not on the field today, and we aren’t sure if it was for a rest day or something else.
QB Marcus Mariota had another rest day today after returning to practice following a couple of rest days last week. Brandon Coleman currently has an injury he suffered on Saturday, and Noah Brown and Jordan Magee have injuries previously, but haven’t missed a day, so it could just be a rest day. Javontae Jean-Baptiste and Mike Sainristil could be resting as well, and haven’t missed a day of practice until today. These are all worth monitoring as the team travels, of course.
Rookie standout continues to shine
Rookie cornerback Trey Amos has been nothing but impressive since he arrived in Washington. The projected starter has had the exact training camp you’d hope to see, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. spoke to the media after practice today and said Amos has had a “good day every day”.
Today, he continued to impress with an interception on Jayden Daniels and a few more pass breakups to add to his collection this offseason.
Amos gets to show off his skill sets against the Patriots’ receiving corps in the joint practice and maybe get a few limited snaps in the preseason game as well.
Other notable mentions from practice
- Matt Gay nailed all of his kicks, including a 50 and a 55-yarder.
- Deebo Samuel’s hand is just fine, and he went back to work with an impressive catch over Jonathan Jones
- Veteran WR Chris Moore has had a lot of flashes in training camp and added another few big catches today from Daniels. One was a high pass in the corner of the endzone. The second stretch of training camp and the preseason games can be a massive opportunity for Moore to fight for a spot on the roster.
The team will announce their first unofficial depth chart today, then travel to New England tomorrow to gear up for the practice on Wednesday and the preseason game on Friday. There are a lot of storylines and players to watch this week that can shake up the depth chart as the season gets closer. We can finally say that it’s game week.

The cold, hard truth is that the Washington Commanders have all of the leverage in the Terry McLaurin contract standoff
The saga between the Washington Commanders and All-Pro WR Terry McLaurin has taken many twists and turns, and it’s slowly gotten worse as the summer drags on. McLaurin has been the only side of the negotiations to make any type of move to push leverage and get a deal done sooner rather than later. He’s […]
