The season is about to start for the Washington Commanders, but it’s also time to hit the road and do some NFL draft scouting work in the background while the team pushes for a Super Bowl. Scouts travel to the biggest games of the college football season, and they were ready for this much-anticipated matchup on Saturday.

Many scouts and general managers from every team in the league went to Columbus, Ohio, for the top showdown between the Texas Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Commanders sent extra reinforcements with multiple reps.

All eyes were on the top teams in the country

Everyone was watching the number one and number three teams in the country go at it, and that includes two different reps from the Commanders, which was more than a lot of other teams sent.

There were a lot of players to watch this weekend for the Commanders, but the Texas and Ohio State matchup had a ton of draft picks who will hear their names called in April, and very well could be in Washington. Adam Peters has done a great job rebuilding the roster, and you can never go wrong with adding a Longhorn or a Buckeye.

Players the Commanders likely left impressed with

Everyone was worried about quarterbacks Arch Manning and Julian Sayin, but luckily, the Commanders have a franchise QB in Jayden Daniels, and got to focus on other players to build around him. Caleb Downs is arguably the best player in the country, and he will be well out of reach for the Commanders if the season goes as expected, so I’m not even going to mention him as a possibility.

Carnell Tate, however, was the most impressive wide receiver on the field, and that’s including Jeremiah Smith and Ryan Wingo. Tate was one of the players I told you to watch, and he ended up having the biggest play of the game. Sayin threw a pass that was underthrown to Tate, and he still managed to jump up and catch it twice for a touchdown, which ultimately won the game.

Another player that popped on film was LB Sonny Styles, who could be a massive replacement for Bobby Wagner if he retires after the season. Styles is 6-foot-5 and 243lbs, and moves with ease in coverage, and stuffs the run like it’s easier than it’s supposed to be. I could see Styles going in the second round right now, and the Ohio State defense will be one of the best in the country.

The Commanders have a lot of questions in the running back room behind Bill Croskey-Merritt and could very well find their next guy in the draft. Quintrevion Wisner was my other player to watch in this game, and, surprise, he had the fifth-highest rushing grade of the weekend on PFF. Wisner finished with 16 carries for 80 yards, which led both teams.

Week 1 was an exciting start to the college football season, and my first players to watch article was spot on for the Texas and Ohio State game. The Commanders will be on the road all season, as they are for the Miami Hurricanes and Notre Dame Fighting Irish matchup, and I’ll be keeping tabs throughout the season on players to watch for the draft.
