The Washington Commanders are en route to its first NFC Championship Game in over 30-years thanks to its dominant win over the Detroit Lions, but the win came at a major cost that can hurt them in the NFC's penultimate game of the season.
Star right guard and the Commanders' best offensive lineman, Sam Cosmi, was injured early in the second quarter after a couple players rolled into the back of his legs, causing him to bend backward in a very awkward way. The end result came in the form of a knee injury and he was ruled out of the game during halftime.
"We're really bummed on Sam and that's a big, a big loss for us," Commanders head coach Dan Quinn told reporters after the game.
Update: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Sunday morning that Cosmi's injury is significiant and he's going to have an MRI. He's likely out for the rest of the playoffs.
"A significant injury to watch for the Washington Commanders is Sam Cosmi, their guard," Rapoport said on NFL Gameday. "An 18.5 million guard and one of the better players on their offensive line is feared to have suffered a significant knee injury last night. He's going to have an MRI on Sunday morning but my expectation is he's out for the rest of the playoffs – a big-time loss there."
Cosmi is a tone-setter up front and while reserve offensive lineman Trent Scott came in and played well, the Commanders certainly want their No. 1 option on the field whether they face either the Rams' duo of Kobie Turner and Bobby Brown III or even more so with the Eagles' duo of Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter.
The bright side is even with Cosmi out, the Commanders still managed to give up zero sacks on the night and they even got the running game going in the second half. Both factors played big roles in the upset, so there's at least something to build off of if Cosmi does miss the rest of the playoffs.
It's certainly not good news, but this team has dealt with adversity all season long, starting with the expectation of winning no more than seven games. How it adjusts to this latest setback will certainly be something to watch next Sunday and possibly two weeks from then.
