The Washington Commanders will be going into Sunday very short-handed once again, but it will be even worse against the Atlanta Falcons with the top weapons on offense officially out.

Marcus Mariota got the start last week and helped drop 41 points on the Las Vegas Raiders, and he’s getting the start against another former team, with Jayden Daniels being held out for another week with his knee sprain. Daniels missed practice on Friday after being limited all week, and he’s officially out for his second straight game after not being cleared by doctors.

Daniels isn’t the only one missing Sunday, and Mariota will be without his top weapon in Terry McLaurin this week. The good news is that McLaurin will not need surgery for his quad injury, and he’s considered “week-to-week” by head coach Dan Quinn. The offense has many more hits with the latest injury report that came out on Friday.

Observations

  • Mariota has a chance to lead the team with back-to-back wins, and he needs help from the depth on the team. Deebo Samuel, Luke McCaffrey, and Jaylin Lane will be massive parts of the offense with McLaurin and Noah Brown officially out.
  • Ja’Corey Brooks could be called up from the practice squad if McLaurin and Brown continue to miss time after Chris Moore was already signed to the active roster. Bill Croskey-Merritt is officially questionable for Sunday after being a full participant, and the team could call up Donovan Edwards or Chase Edmunds from the practice squad if they rule him out before the game.

Observations

  • The Falcons have the top passing defense in the league, even without A.J. Terrell, and the passing offense will have its biggest test this weekend to get something going. Expect this to be a low-scoring game on Sunday.
  • Pass rusher James Pearce Jr. was a full participant at practice with Kyle Pitts, DeMarcco Hellams, and Casey Washington who are all good to go for Sunday.
