NFC East rival hints at stealing Commanders’ pending free agent after leaving door open on his return
The Washington Commanders could lose a top pending free agent to the Dallas Cowboys after Brian Schottenheimer praised the future Hall of Famer.
The Washington Commanders made multiple changes this offseason during an active free agency period with a lot of new faces around.
They also let a lot of their own free agents walk, while more have yet to sign with a team, including one future Hall of Famer. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn left the door open on bringing LB Bobby Wagner back, although they love their LB room as it stands.
They may not have the chance to bring Wagner back if the Dallas Cowboys end up stealing him first.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer hinted at signing Bobby Wagner
The Commanders added LB Leo Chenal in free agency, and they’re expected to have a big season from Frankie Luvu and Jordan Magee as well, but Quinn said they’d always welcome Wagner’s leadership. One outcome they’d hate to see happen is Wagner joining Washington’s biggest rivals instead.
The door is wide open for the Cowboys to sign Wagner after head coach Brian Schottenheimer praised how much he loved the future Hall of Famer on the Up and Adams Show.
“I will say this,” Schottenheimer said. “Number one, we’ve made some really strong runs at inside linebackers. It hasn’t worked out. You’re looking at one of the biggest Bobby Wagner fans in the world, being in Seattle with him for three years and watching him compete and just talk trash in a good way. I love that guy, and he’s still playing at a high level. So we’ll see how everything works out. It’s an exciting time of year, but Bobby Wagner, total stud.”
Should the Commanders bring back Bobby Wagner?
The Commanders got much younger at LB, but sometimes that isn’t the best thing if there’s not a true leader. Regardless, it’s time for the Commanders to let the young players step up and develop while taking on bigger roles.
Luvu has the most experience, and Chenal will be taking over his biggest role yet after joining the Commanders, while Magee goes into his most important season yet. The future looks bright at the position, and that’s not even including the possibility of drafting LB Sonny Styles if he falls to No. 7 overall.
I don’t see Wagner coming back, especially with how limited his role would be with his liability in coverage, but he can still be a solid player for a team that needs a LB after the NFL Draft.
