The Washington Commanders are worried about finishing the season strong with a Week 18 rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles, and then it’s time for the offseason.

There may already be a unique opportunity that just popped up after a surprising move by an NFC East rival, which head coach Dan Quinn will probably be all over. The Dallas Cowboys just released All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs. He will head to waivers and become a free agent if he isn’t claimed.

The Commanders need help on defense, but this is a move that Quinn needs to stay far away from.

Cowboys release former All-Pro corner Trevon Diggs

This has been in the works for a while now, given their tarnished relationship, but the Cowboys finally decided to move on from Diggs just two years after giving him a $97 million extension.

Diggs hasn’t stayed healthy after tearing his ACL, and he’s only played in 21 out of 50 games since his extension. When he has played, it’s been rough, as he was even benched early in the 2025 season. He’s allowing almost 18 yards per catch, and he’s a liability in coverage, which is the last thing the Commanders need. Diggs honestly couldn’t be playing any worse, and he’s allowing a perfect passer rating of 158.3 when targeted this season.

Will the Commanders have interest in Trevon Diggs?

General manager Adam Peters needs to revamp the Commanders’ defense this offseason, and he will have plenty of options. Diggs should absolutely not be one of those options, but we all know Quinn will at least explore the possibility.

Quinn loves his connections in the NFL, and sometimes just a little too much. Whether it’s his loyalty to bad players or not firing defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. after having a historically bad defense, Quinn sometimes just can’t let go.

That’s a huge problem, and things won’t change unless Quinn learns his lesson, adapts to the modern game, and expands his coaching. The Commanders need healthy, promising, ascending players, not former greats who can’t stay healthy and are playing their worst. Yes, Quinn had success with him in Dallas, but that was the past, and things have changed drastically.

Signing Diggs would honestly be the final straw in my trust in Quinn and a move that pushes the team in the opposite direction. It would be a lateral move similar to bringing back Marshon Lattimore, which would also be a huge mistake.

The Commanders need to find a new defensive coordinator and new talent to fix the defense, and Quinn’s process will be a huge part of it. Luckily, Diggs will probably sign with the Green Bay Packers or the Chicago Bears for the playoffs, and Quinn won’t have a chance to explore signing him.
