Dan Quinn provided a vital injury update on the Commanders, including the status on a key starter for the offensive line
Fans should be ecstatic over this injury update by Dan Quinn.
Week 1 of the season is less than three weeks away, and the Washington Commanders have been dealing with a lot of injuries to some key players. Commanders HC Dan Quinn spoke to the media on Wednesday and provided the most positive injury update we’ve heard in a long time.
The team is getting healthy down the final stretch of the offseason, and it’s great seeing these players get back to the practice field just in time to get ready for the season.
Three key players are back in time for more reps
The Commanders have been without a couple of younger players who have missed important practice and playing time, but two came back today for the first time in a while. Left guard Brandon Coleman has been out since August 2nd, and he took the field today to ramp back up into practice.
Coleman’s move from left tackle to left guard should help him hit his ceiling as a player, but he’s missed vital time of gelling with the rest of the line. Quinn called the injuries concerning last week and stressed how important continuity is up front, and how missing time can affect how the line performs. Coleman coming back is the biggest injury update for the team, and there’s time to get on the same page now.
LB Jordan Magee is the other player who has been out for a few weeks, and the depth at LB has been a focal point in his absence. There’s not much to bank on behind Frankie Luvu and Bobby Wagner, so Magee coming back and staying healthy is a crucial storyline this season.
Rookie CB Trey Amos has been a star in training camp, but everyone was surprised to see him not play against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. Quinn let us know that they held him out due to hamstring tightness. Amos is back at practice today, and everyone can breathe again.
Health status of McLaurin
Of course, the main player that people are wondering about is if All-Pro WR Terry McLaurin is back with the team. This is the first question asked before every practice, and rightfully so, but even Quinn got frustrated at the questions about McLaurin today. McLaurin is not with the team on the field, but he’s going through conditioning and the ready-to-play process that all injured players go through. He is not in the rehab process anymore. McLaurin will eventually return, and that’s the expectation.
Update on Sam Cosmi
Quinn said weeks ago that Sam Cosmi could possibly play Week 1 if he hit all of his markers, but there was still a lot of work to do. He said today that it’s still unknown exactly when he will be back, but he’s still hitting all of his strides for a return. The team won’t rush him back, and Andrew Wylie can fill in at right guard with no problem in the meantime.
Marcus Mariota returned as well
You never want to have to play your backup quarterback, but we saw Marcus Mariota come in a couple of times last season and really step up. We also saw how rough the QB3 battle has been in preseason, and getting Mariota back will help calm some nerves. Mariota has been out for a few weeks, but returned to practice for the first time today.
There are still a few injuries that the Commanders are dealing with, but these are the big updates we’ve been wanting to hear about. The team is getting healthy at the perfect time, with the season coming up quickly, and now everyone can get ready for the last preseason game and start to prep for the New York Giants.
